As this year comes to a close, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve achieved as a campaign and more importantly, ‘why’ we’re here in the first place.
Free Childcare UK was created out of necessity. Not as a political slogan or a headline-grabbing movement, but as a response to the lived reality of families, childcare providers, and professionals across the UK who were being told one thing and experiencing another.
This year, that shared frustration has grown into something powerful.
Why we started – and why we aren’t going anywhere!
The promise of ‘free childcare’ has been widely celebrated, but for many families and providers, the reality looks very different.
Behind the headlines are
- Parents struggling to afford hidden costs
- Providers forced to operate at a loss
- Staff leaving the sector due to unsustainable workloads
- Children missing out on consistent, high-quality care
We’re here because the system isn’t working as it should and because families deserve honesty, transparency, and real solutions.
This campaign exists to highlight the gap between policy and reality
- Give a voice to parents and childcare professionals

- Highlighted the pressure placed on private nurseries and childminders
- Shared the real experiences of families navigating the system

- Break down complex issues in an accessible way
- Start honest conversations without blame or judgement
- Humanise the campaign and make it relatable
- Reach audiences who may never read policy documents or reports
- Short, impactful videos explaining key issues
- Honest discussions around funding, fairness, and childcare realities
- Sharing lived experiences from across the sector
- Encouraging engagement, conversation, and awareness
- Why childcare providers are struggling
- Why ‘free hours’ aren’t actually free
- How underfunding impacts quality and availability
- What this means for children, families, and staff
- A recognisable voice
- A growing community
- A clear message
- A platform that people trust
- Amplify real voices
- Challenge misleading narratives
- Support families and providers
- Push for meaningful, lasting change
Childcare or Childhood? Why Convenience Isn’t Always Best
Picture this: it’s Monday morning. You’re juggling bags, lunchboxes, and two little hands. The government’s latest adverts promise a neat solution — one drop-off for both children, at the same school gate. Easy. Convenient. Done. But here’s the question no one’s...
Why school nurseries aren’t the magic fix parents are being promised
On the face of it, the government’s plan sounds brilliant: more nurseries based in schools, more “free” childcare places, more choice for parents, but if you scratch beneath the headlines, the truth is far less shiny. Expanding nurseries in schools alone won’t solve...
When State Childcare Risks Becoming Institutional
I’ve been watching with unease as the Department for Education proudly rolls out its social mediareels, showing how easy it is for parents to drop off two children at school and nursery in the sameplace. But here’s the real question: who is this setup really...
Childcare Costs: The Truth Behind the Headlines
Over the past decade, few topics have stirred as much parental frustration and political rhetoric as childcare costs. The mainstream narrative has been clear: childcare is unaffordable, underfunded, and in urgent need of government reform. But what if that...
The Reality Behind the Headlines: Why “Free Childcare” Isn’t Free
This past week has seen a flurry of government announcements about early years: Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s open letter to parents, full of promises under the Best Start in Life banner, and the appointment of Olivia Bailey as the new Early Education Minister. On...
What on earth is going on with childcare fees?
When the government announced that 30 hours of free childcare would be extended to children from nine months old, I felt a wave of relief. Like many parents, I thought this was finally the breakthrough we’d all been waiting for. Childcare is one of the biggest...
The Myth of ‘Free’ Childcare: A Crisis in the Making
September marks the arrival of the much-publicised 30 hours of so-called ‘free childcare.’ For parents, this announcement often brings relief. For childcare providers, it’s more likely to bring a deep sigh of dread. The reality behind the headline offer involves...
